Dear readers of my blog,

an absence of more than five weeks needs no explanation if at the end of which you will find the accumulated results of more than two years' work: the memoir by Tanya Josefowitz "I Remember" has just been published in a hardcover version and as a special schools' edition (for the details, please see below). For those whose affinity with books is on the decline, which I would regret because volumes such as these live on the fact that they can also be touched and smelled, there is also an e-book (for the details, please see below).

At the same time, my students had asked Tanya Josefowitz questions which she answered from her home in a videa message which is going to be shown at Norden, East Frisia, Germany to accompany the exhibition prepared by students of English classes at Ulrichsgymnasium.

You can imagine that with Brexit being postponed I was relieved to focus on preparing this exhibition and working on Oscar Wilde in the background. The calendar for 2020 is almost complete. If you look at this month's "special" days, you will see that Queen Victoria's bicentenary is on Friday 24th May, while the 124th anniversary of Wilde being sentenced is on Saturdary 25th May 2019. It is interesting to note in passim that in 1897 Wilde paid a party of small boys at Dieppe to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Certainly, he was a loyal Royalist. I will be back soon on Wilde and Ireland, but first I strongly recommend Tanya Josefowitz in the context of Anne Frank to, since this is the main topic of today's post.

Exhibition at Norden, East Frisia, Ulrichsgymnasium, Norden, arts building

An exhibition of posters prepared by classes 9b (Anne Frank) and 10b (Tanya Josefowitz) is going to open in the arts building at Ulrichsgymnasium Norden on 8th May 2019. The opening ceremony is at 3.30 p.m. in Room F03, at Fräuleinshof, Norden. Frau Elke Scheiner, the initiator of the project and personal friend of Tanya Josefowitz is going to read passages from the memoir in German. Thereafter, the exhibition is open Monday to Friday to 24th May with special events to be announced for 17th May and for 12th June, the 90th birthday of either Tanya Josefowitz or Anne Frank.

Based on their reading of the memoir when it was still forthcoming, students studied both family trees and shipping lists to find out more about the Kagan family's flight from Germany in early 1938. They also created their own artworks based on juxtaposing portraits of Tanya Josefowitz when young and in old age. Likewise, in writing they produced their own answers to questions that may have haunted survivors all their lives. It is interesting to see emerge an image of Tanya Josefowitz' life of resistance in the context of both facts, memories, photos, and writings and drawings created by young students. The exhibition is supplemented by a video message interview in English and German prepared with Tanya Josefowitz in Geneva based on questions put to her by the Norden students.

Anne Frank is far better known, both in Germany at large and at Norden where a travelling exhibition had been shown in the same rooms of the arts building in the late summer of 2017. So by way of introduction, there are posters on Anne Frank and her quite different life of resistance.

Tanya Josefowitz, author’s life:

Tanya Josefowitz née Kagan was born in Worms on the Rhine on 17th May 1929. Her father Ilya is a self-employed cabinet-maker and designer who remains in Germany after World War One, retaining his Russian passport.

In early 1938, the Kagan family is served the expulsion note. Soon, father Ilya leaves with a visitor’s visa provided by his American relatives. His family follows suit. A few weeks on, they are in New York, a new life begins.

Tanya marries David Josefowitz. They have three daughters. Tanya wants to design fashion before becoming an artist. In 1999, she writes “I Remember”. By then, she had been living in London and Geneva for a long time. In 2009, the catalogue of her artistic works is published. In 2016, stepping-stones are laid for the Kagan family in Worms. In 2019, her memoir is issued as both bilingual hardcover book and E-book and in a special limited paperback edition for the use in schools, not carrying an ISBN and only available through Dr Jörg W. Rademacher at Ulrichsgymnasium Norden.

Ausstellung in Norden, Ostfriesland, Ulrichsgymnasium, Norden, Kunstgebäude

Eine Plakat-Ausstellung, vorbereitet von den Klassen 9b (Anne Frank) und 10b (Tanya Josefowitz) wird am 8. Mai 2019 im Kunstgebäude des Ulrichsgymnasiums Norden eröffnet. Die Vernissage findet um 15 Uhr 30 in Raum F03, Zugang Fräuleinshof, Norden, statt. Frau Elke Scheiner, die Initiatorin des Projekts und persönliche Freundin von Tanya Josefowitz wird Stellen aus dem Memoir in deutscher Sprache lesen. Danach ist die Ausstellung von Montag bis Freitag bis zum 24. Mai während der Schulzeit geöffnet. Für den 17. Mai und den 12. Juni werden jeweils zum 90. Geburtstag von Tanya Josefowitz und Anne Frank noch besondere Veranstaltungen angekündigt.

Gründend auf ihrer Lektüre des Memoir “I Remember”, als es noch nicht erschienen war, haben die Schülerinnen und Schüler sowohl Stammbäume als auch Schiffspassagierlisten untersucht, um mehr über die Flucht der Familie Kagan aus Deutschland im Jahr 1938 zu erfahren. Auch haben sie eigene Kunstwerke kreiert beruhend auf der Gegenüberstellung von Porträts von Tanya Josefowitz damals und heute. Ebenso haben sie eigene Antworten auf Fragen gefunden, die Überlebende ihr ganzes Leben lang verfolgt haben mögen. So ist es interessant zu sehen, wie ein Bild von Tanya Josefowitz' Leben im/als Widerstand entsteht im Kontext von sowohl Fakten, als auch Erinnerungen, Photos, Schriften und Zeichnungen. Die Ausstellung wird ergänzt durch ein Video-Botschafts-Interview, das mit Tanya Josefowitz in Genf auf Englisch und Deutsch geführt wurde, beruhend auf den Fragen, die die Norder Klassen ihr gestellt hatten.

Anne Frank ist viel bekannter, sowohl in Deutschland überhaupt als auch in Norden, wo im Spätsommer in den gleichen Räumen des Kunstgebäudes eine Wanderausstellung stattfand. Also gibt es zur Einführung Plakate zu Anne Frank und ihrem ganz anderen Leben im/als Widerstand.

Tanja Josefowitz, Kurzvita deutsch:

Tanya Josefowitz, geb. Kagan wird am 17. Mai 1929 in Worms am Rhein geboren. Ihr Vater Ilya ist selbständiger Möbeltischler und Designer, der nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg in Deutschland bleibt, aber den russischen Paß behält.

Anfang 1938 erhält Familie Kagan den Ausweisungsbescheid. Bald ist Vater Ilya mit einem Besuchervisum zu Verwandten in die USA unterwegs. Die Familie folgt ihm. Nach wenigen Wochen sind sie in New York, es beginnt ein neues Leben.

Tanya heiratet David Josefowitz und hat mit ihm drei Töchter. Zuerst möchte sie Mode entwerfen, später wird sie Künstlerin. 1999 schreibt sie „I Remember“. Da lebt sie schon lange in London und Genf. 2009 erscheint auf Englisch ein Werkkatalog. 2016 werden in Worms Stolpersteine für die Familie Kagan verlegt. 2019 erscheint „I Remember“ als zweisprachiges Hardcover und E-Book sowie als limitierte Schulsonderausgabe im Paperback ohne ISBN, die nur über Dr. Jörg W. Rademacher am Ulrichsgymnasium Norden erhältlich ist.
